New Project Launched to Support People Caring for Loved Ones Struggling with their Mental health.
A group of mental health charities have joined forces to launch a project offering support to carers of people struggling with their mental health. The aim is to create a safe and supportive space where carers feel seen, valued and less alone.
The project is a partnership involving three mental health charities Space to Breathe, Sheffield Flourish and Sheffield Mind, who each bring a different strength and area of specialism. Carers will be able to access practical support, emotional support, peer support and help during times of crisis for their loved one.
“Supporting someone you love who is struggling with their mental health can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. Carers are often instrumental in the recovery of someone struggling with their mental health, but they are so focused on supporting the needs of others that they can overlook their own wellbeing. This project is putting the carer front and centre.”
Andy Freeman, Director at Space to Breathe
A carer support worker will support the carer with practical care and signposting, emotional awareness and mindfulness tools, advocating on their behalf and helping them to navigate the mental health system. Carers can access the project via Sheffield Mind, who will take some details and put the carer in touch with the right support worker, depending on the immediate needs.
“All we ask is that carer is over the age of 18, Sheffield based and supporting or caring for a family member or friend who is struggling with their mental health or who has been diagnosed with a mental health condition. If that’s you, and you feel like you could benefit from some support, then please get in touch.”
Edyta Bancer-Dunham, Director of Services at Sheffield Mind.
The project is also being supported and funded through Synergy, an alliance of Sheffield-based charities working in the mental health field.
“We know there are so many people struggling with their mental health at the moment and the only way we can be responsive as a city is through good partnership working. The collaborative approach to this project means carers are getting the experience and support of not one charity but three.”
Josie Soutar, Managing Director at Sheffield Flourish
