Here at Space to Breathe, we were shocked and saddened at the tragic incident that occurred during the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey match at the weekend. We join others in sending our condolences to the family & friends of Adam Johnson, as well as players, staff and the 8000 fans who were in attendance.
You may have witnessed what happened or be disturbed by the reports of this terrible accident. If that’s the case, be kind to yourself, realising that it is perfectly normal if you feel distressed or have had an emotional reaction. Realise your emotions are your own and that however you feel is important - let yourself feel what you feel and take time to care for yourself.
If you’re supporting others, again recognise the impact and go gently on yourself.
Below is an excellent NHS leaflet on the impact of trauma after a major incident, we encourage you to download and read it.
In the coming days and week’s you may feel you need some support.

Moving forward
Trauma from an incident like this affects us immediately after what happened. It is then common for you to naturally recover from this experience within a few weeks however if you are still experiencing difficulties after three to four weeks, you may wish to seek help or support. Locally there are many resources for people seeking help and support after a traumatic incident. Check out the Sheffield Mental Health Guide for more.
You can also make contact with us at Space to Breathe via the form below and we’d be happy to talk to you.
