Coaching and Supervision

Coaching provides a safe space where individuals are able to unravel their thoughts and gain greater clarity. Sessions provide the mental space and time to step back and look at what’s going on together, exploring possible ways forward. We can also provide supervision to those who are already caring for others e.g school staff, charity workers.

Space to Breathe’s coaching and supervision services are available at £60 for one session (60 mins), or a block of 3 sessions booked at the same time for a reduced price of £150. We can also offer bespoke options to provide coaching to multiple employees in one workspace. Please use the link below to enquire or to book in sessions.

Why Coaching?

Coaching can be especially helpful for those who are:

  • In times of transition or change, including taking on a new job role. Coaching can help to process the impact of changes and help people to better integrate new information or experiences.

  • Working with vulnerable children or young people. Coaching can help people to process the emotional demands made on them, and gain greater insight on ways forward. This is sometimes called reflective supervision.

  • Leading and managing competing demands. Coaching can help people to reflect on how and what they are spending their time on, and how to better manage the demands of their role.

  • Struggling with their mental health wellbeing. Coaching can help to clarify what an individual can do to support themselves, and identify what additional support they might also access. Often coaching can be a precursor to accessing counselling or therapy or be helpful for those people who are moving away from clinical support.

  • Not sure what they want and need to become happier and healthier. Coaching can help people to ‘unravel’ their thinking and identify underlying needs, motivations and ways forward.

A coach may sometimes give advice, and signpost to further resources and support, but will primarily listen, reflect and ask question that empower the individual to think ‘well’ for themselves.

Sometimes people who come to coaching need to simply ‘off load’, sometimes they come needing to find answers to dilemmas they’re facing, sometimes people need space to consider a range of ideas. All of these are possible within a coaching session, and every session is led by whatever the individual needs.

Ben Harper

Our services are headed up by Ben Harper, who is a qualified coach with a 20+ year career in education. Ben has spent much of his career supporting vulnerable young people and now provides wellbeing training and support to Headteachers, Teachers and others who work in schools. He loves to ask incisive questions and give people space to explore their own thoughts and feelings. A self confessed chatter box, but a big believer in the power of listening, Ben has been on a journey of honing his listening skills and loves seeing people have their own ‘light bulb’ moments when they unlock something in their own minds. Ben primarily takes a ‘person centred approach’ which focusses on helping people to identify strengths, resources and wisdom already present within the individual.

FAQ

Is coaching the same as counselling?

There are some crossovers in that both provide a safe space to talk, but counselling will primarily focus on the past and it’ impact on the present,  wheras coaching focusses much more on the present and what is needed in the future. Both are valid and helpful in their own way. Sometimes a coach may recommend seeing a counsellor and sometimes coaching can help people after they’ve received counselling.  It’s usually best not to be working with both a coach and counsellor at the same time, as this can be confusing.

Why do people not access coaching?

Many people say they would love someone to really listen to them, but in reality there is a vulnerability in doing this. People can often put off accessing coaching because they are worried about what they might have to talk about. Be reassured that coaching is led by the person being coached and you can set your own limits as you go along. Time is the other limiting factor, but often coaching can increase efficiency as it leads to clearer thinking.

Is coaching for me?

Almost definitely yes. People rarely don’t benefit from coaching, but there are particular times when it can be especially effective. Some of those scenarios are above. If you’re not sure, we recommend you book one session to explore what it’s like and consider together with a coach what you might be able to gain from the process.

How many sessions should I book?

This can vary from person to person and situation to situation. One off sessions can be great in response to a particular challenge or by way of checking out what coaching can do for you, but more regular sessions can be booked for those who need to regularly process the emotional and practical  aspects of their work. Booking this at regular intervals with the same person can provide some stability and consistency which can make the coaching even more meaningful.  For those in transition, booking a block of three sessions can be a good way of reflecting as change is happening around you.

How do I access it?

You can click here to make an enquiry. You will be asked to say in a few words why you are looking for coaching – if you’re not sure, that’s ok! You can choose whether you’d like us to email or call you in the first instance and even suggest times that might be best to catch you (as well as times you really don’t want us to call). We’ll give you chance to ask any questions about coaching, and an enquiry doesn’t commit you to anything. If you do want to pursue it, we’ll work out with you dates and times to meet.

Where does coaching happen?

If you’re in Sheffield or the surrounding area, we’re happy to travel to your workplace or a neutral location like a quiet café to meet with you. Coaching can also happen over zoom if this is more convenient for you.
