The Wellbeing Wheel of the Year: Awaken

Awaken: Stepping into Spring Together

As the wheel of the year turns, something begins to stir. The days lengthen, light returns, and the earth slowly stretches awake from winter’s quiet rest. Spring is a season of renewal, a gentle invitation to reconnect—with ourselves, with each other, and with the natural world around us.

Our upcoming Awaken gathering at Grimethorpe Allotments on 27th March is a chance to honour this moment in the cycle of the year. Taking place just after the spring equinox, it’s a time when day and night come back into balance and the energy of growth begins to rise again. After the slower rhythms of winter, many of us feel the quiet urge to move, create and begin again.

Spending time outdoors is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support our wellbeing. Nature offers space to breathe, to pause, and to step away from the constant busyness of modern life. Research consistently shows that even short periods outside can reduce stress, improve mood and help us feel more grounded. When we step onto the soil, listen to birdsong, or notice the first shoots pushing through the earth, we are reminded that change and renewal are always possible.

Gardening in particular brings a special kind of connection. There is something deeply satisfying about putting hands into the soil, tending to plants, and participating in the slow, patient rhythm of growth. It invites mindfulness without effort — our attention naturally settles as we plant, water, and care for living things.

During the Awaken event we’ll spend time together at the Flourish allotment, sharing some gentle gardening, seasonal conversation and community connection. No experience is needed — just a willingness to be outside, get your hands a little muddy, and enjoy the company of others who value wellbeing and nature.

Gathering like this reminds us that wellbeing doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s simply about being present: standing in the fresh spring air, sharing food and conversation, and feeling part of something larger than ourselves.

As the earth begins its new cycle of growth, what might be awakening in you this season?

We’d love for you to join us as we welcome spring together.
