Behind the scenes: empowering communities to look after their mental health and wellbeing

We were really pleased to start a piece of work with the community of Firs and Bromford in Birmingham this month. This two year project aims to build to capacity of local people to manage the mental health needs in their community. The project will involve working with local people to identify the needs and opportunities to provide better support for mental health and wellbeing. We hope to empower local people to look after their own wellbeing as well as support others.

Firs and Bromford is an area on the eastern edge of Birmingham originally built in the 1950’s and 60’s, and is rich with people from many different backgrounds. The estate has many assets but is among the second decile in the index of multiple deprivation (IMD), and so there are many challenges for the people living there.

As our first month on site has developed we’ve been involved in getting to know the local area better, and meeting people who are already doing some great work to make their community a more friendly and supportive place. Andy has had the chance to work with the brilliant teams from Open Door and Worth Unlimited too.

Our first phase of work will involve listening to people’s stories, experiences and perspectives. We’re keen to use our best creative tools to encourage people to contribute and are starting to work out which local spots will be best to place ourselves in the coming weeks.

It’s such a privilege to be involved in this community transforming work, and we look forward to sharing more of our progress with you in the coming months.
